Dental crown – what does it really mean?
Dr. Marton: A dental crown is a fixed prosthesis that covers the entire visible surface of a tooth. In other words, dental crowns are used in dentistry not only for implants, but also in all cases where tooth damage or a missing piece can no longer be solved by a simple filling or a so-called inlay or onlay (personalised dental filling) procedure. It can also be used in the case of tooth axis correction, even instead of orthodontics, as part of a complex work when fixing the supporting elements of a removable prosthesis or even for aesthetic reasons.
If you need a crown, which solutions are available?
Dr. Marton: According to their material, several types of crowns can be distinguished: zirconia, metal-ceramic and plastic crowns. The latter are only used for temporary restorations. A metal-ceramic crown is a porcelain crown fired on a traditional metal frame. Since this solution is not as lifelike but is very resistant to chewing, it is recommended for back teeth. For visible front teeth, it is better to choose a metal-free zirconia crown that is almost identical to the natural teeth.
What are the benefits of a zircon crown?
Dr. Marton: A zirconia crown not only perfectly reproduces the colour and character of natural teeth, its translucency matches the original tooth enamel, providing a particularly aesthetic and lifelike solution. It also avoids the dark line between the crown and the gum that sometimes occurs with metal-ceramic crowns. It is also excellent from a functional point of view: long-lasting, fully suitable for chewing. Computer-assisted design ensures a precise and accurate fit. As it is metal-free, it is the optimal solution for people with metal allergies.
